Free and enhanced version

If only the paid version will use the latest Source Engine, I assume there will come up some compatiblity issues in view of the multiplayer.

I guess it is intended that users of the free und the paid version can play together so it's probably necessary that both utilize the same Source Engine.

If you want to reward supporters, maybe there are other options.
